A Note from the Office

The Professional Baseball Employment Opportunities program has taken the next step. As many of you have experienced first hand, the program is now on-line. We have taken the past 10 years of experience and built www.PBEO.com. We created the site with the purpose of giving you, our members, 24-hour access to our services, by providing you with automatic job posting emails, up-to-date information on upcoming events and the latest in baseball employment.

With this change comes growth. When we launched PBEO.com, we had just over 600 members. After three weeks of service, we now have over 740 members. The message is out. For $50, being a member of PBEO is a great investment.

Since this is a new site, there are sure to be some irregularities. We are constantly striving to give you the most user-friendly baseball employment site on the web. If at anytime you encounter an error page, or the site is not working correctly, please email us with the problem and we will fix it as fast as possible. We appreciate your patience.

We love to hear from our members. Please contact us at info@pbeo.com if you have a accepted a position, either from the Job Fair or independently. Also, since PBEO is now an on-line service, it is imperative that we have a current email address for you. It is also important that your email in-box is not full so that you can receive messages, and more importantly, job postings. Please make sure to update your profile with any address, email and résumé changes.

Sincerely,

Scott Kravchuk
Assistant Director, Special Operations

You Have to Work to Get That Job- The Thoughts of One GM

By: Jennifer Whiteley, General Manager, Visalia Oaks, Class A Advanced, California League

It seems like potential new hires don’t realize it takes a lot of work to get a job. If you can’t land an interview but believe you are qualified, please read this. It may be worth taking a second look at your presentation.

Baseball jobs are very difficult to land. For each opening I have at any given time, I have over 50 applicants. I interview five (5). You need to be in the top 10% of applicants to get to the interview. You need to be in the top 2% of applicants to land the job.

email vs. Regular Mail, Tape vs. CD

Professional:            Mailed résumé with a labeled CD if applicable

Find the resources to make the CD!

                             Label properly addressed (triple-check spelling)

                             Un-folded paper

Neutral color or white paper, good quality

                             Personalized

Not professional:      Unlabeled CD

Label with my name or the team name misspelled

                             Folded résumé/cover letter

Handwritten notes on résumé or cover letter

                             emailed résumé

Cover letters that start with “From the time I was eight (8)”

Tailored Information

Please customize your cover letter, and, yes, write a cover letter. Keep it brief; two or three short paragraphs should cover it. Include something in the cover letter about yourself that is not in your résumé. Know something about the organization before you even write the cover letter. Find out the size of the operation (staff and attendance) to give yourself a better perspective of what the team is seeking. For example, the Oaks’ complete office staff consists of a General Manager, a Director of Media and Marketing, a Director of Group Sales, and a Finance Assistant. Based on this information, I am probably not looking for a Director of Stadium Vending.

Address the letter and envelope properly. If my name, the team name, or the city is misspelled, I am turned off before I even see the résumé.

If you are so lucky to have a variety of experiences for your résumé, list the jobs most relevant to the position for which you are applying. Keep your résumé down to one page. I mean it.

Do not worry if you do not have any relevant experience. Count on an internship to start.

When, Where & How

Timing is everything. Yes and no. If you send a résumé blind (without knowing if there is an open position) and hit something, thank timing! Debating to send a résumé for an internship in November or March? Send it in November. Go to the Winter Meetings. Hook up with the Professional Baseball Employment Opportunities (PBEO) program (you’re already on the right track).

Follow-Up?

Yes. Let me rephrase that – follow up, but once is usually enough. If you are wondering if the GM you sent your résumé to received it, stop worrying and use the delivery confirmation service that the post office offers. Instead of calling to follow up, call in advance and ask the GM questions about the position. You can ask what their time frame is for hiring. If you haven’t received a response and you’re tired of waiting, you can call to see if the position has been filled.

Grain of Salt Disclosure

I hope you enjoyed hearing most of my pet peeves of the application process. I am confident there is something here that will help you get the job. If your time would have been better spent emailing three résumés rather than reading this, check your résumé again, and I bet you find a typo! Try to appreciate that other GM’s might have a different approach to hiring and put different values on the various measuring sticks of applicants. Maybe there are some employers that prefer email résumés to paper. Why not ask when you call to learn about the position?

Once you sign up for your first internship, you can look forward to working more hours than you knew there were in a day. You can also look forward to the best summer of your life. [Top]

9th Annual Job Fair Wrap-Up

The PBEO Job Fair held last December 13-15 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, TN was a success. We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to Dr. Jan Bell and the interns from St. Thomas University; Ross, Manny, Chris, Michael, Paul, Eric, Christopher, Doug, Jeremy and Jenn, for all of their hard work and dedication at the Job Fair.

We would also like to thank all of the Minor and Major League Baseball clubs for their assistance in Nashville. Year after year, the job postings become more competitive and the drive to bring in more qualified candidates grows. The bar has been raised.

The numbers from the 9th Annual Job Fair were impressive. In Nashville, we had a total of 442 positions from both Minor and Major League Baseball. The year before in Boston, we had a total of 381 positions. We hope to have even more this year in New Orleans. [Top]
